Culture rarely breaks overnight.

It usually shifts gradually, through small moments and conversations that keep getting put off.

By the time it feels urgent, you might already be seeing signs like:

  • Strong performers pulling back

  • Tension in the team that no one talks about

  • Good new starters leaving early

  • Leaders unsure how things got off track

If something feels off in your team, pay attention to it. Problems like these rarely fix themselves.

So when should you address it?

Early. You don’t need to wait for the next review cycle, the end of a big project or a quieter month. Those moments don’t often arrive.

Culture is being shaped every day, whether you’re shaping it or not. The longer a problem goes unaddressed, the more it becomes the norm.

What addressing it looks like

It doesn’t have to mean a full reset or a long culture program. Start here:

  • Name what you’re noticing. Be honest with your team and with yourself about what doesn’t feel right.

  • Ask for input. Ask your team what they’re seeing and what they need. Make it safe for them to be honest.

  • Go back to your values. Where is there a gap between what you say you value and what people experience?

  • Take one clear step. That might be clarifying expectations, addressing a behaviour or agreeing on new ways of working. It shows your team that culture is a priority.

If the issue involves bullying, harassment or other psychosocial hazards, you also have work health and safety duties to manage that risk.

The bottom line

Good cultures aren’t perfect. They’re looked after.

At Kairos HR, we help businesses pick up culture issues early, so they can fix them while they’re still manageable.
